As a Senior Scientist on Material Technology, you will help to steer the direction of strategic corporate technology by focusing on solving industrial problems through reliable and quality research work. Working as a researcher in R&D projects, you will perform applied research and solve challenging technology problems.
In our highly skilled, experienced, and multi-disciplinary team, we aim to develop sustainable solutions within the product segments of motors, switchgear, and energy storage systems (batteries, fuel cells). Our R&D topics include novel materials, surface science and engineering, advanced manufacturing solutions and energy storage devices. Reporting to the Research Team Manager, you will perform research & technology development to utilize innovative material solutions (with polymers and metals) in our product/service offerings and motivate continuous value addition, both for our customers and ABB.
Your responsibilities
Lead or be an individual contributor in projects related to applied material technology (metals or polymers), high performance coatings, surface engineering and tribology.
Perform experimental investigations and prototype tests in the laboratory.
Challenge conventional systems/ideas and validate new product design concepts considering novel materials and advanced manufacturing methods, as suitable for the application.
Scout relevant material/manufacturing technologies and solutions and generate innovative ideas that promote sustainability and circularity.
Generate intellectual property and document project results by writing/delivering quality technical reports.
Collaborate with internal ABB stakeholders and external academic/industrial partners.
Your background
PhD or Master´s degree with several years (> 5 years) of applied research and technology development experience related to materials. Educational background can be in Material Science/Technology/Engineering, Polymer Science and/or Technology, Applied Physics, Electrical or Electronics engineering, Mechanical engineering etc.
Strong in the fundamentals of material science & technology in polymers and/or metals. Experience in metallic/polymer coatings, surface engineering and tribology is an advantage.
Proven experience of developing material technology solutions for applications in electrical products at different voltage levels (LV/MV/HV).
Practical hands-on experience in designing and developing experimental test set-ups and performing materials analysis, electrical and mechanical testing.
Experience and/or exposure to sustainability and circular economy is a plus.
Exposure and experience of HSE procedures in the work environment.
Skilled in communicating in English (discussion, presentation, and reporting).
As a person you have a strong team spirit, is ready to take own initiatives, be proactive and deliver high quality results with agility and within the stipulated deadlines.
Good collaboration capabilities in a technical team and laboratory environment.
