We are looking for a passionate and experienced Senior Metallurgist to join us in our mission to contribute to a greener future. The role is a part of our Quality Control team at Northvolt Labs, based in Västerås, Sweden. By joining us, you will be a key player in supporting and improving the metallurgical processes of our R&D and Labs battery cell production lines and ultimately contribute towards building one of the first large scale European battery factories.
About the job
As Senior Metallurgist, you will lead all metallurgic related quality inspections of battery cells, components and parts as well as be involved in hands-on battery cell production investigation activities. The investigations you will be involved in could cover a broad range of issues, including manufacturing variability, mechanical performance, contaminant identification, and analysis of test and field failures. In this role, we expect you to have an analytical mindset and a hands-on approach to your tasks. You enjoy working in the laboratory, teaching and sharing your knowledge across the team to build up competence, and can effectively collaborate across group boundaries (Production Technology, R&D, Supplier/Customer Quality, etc.) to continuously improve our metallurgy related manufacturing processes and testing capabilities in the laboratory.
About the team
You will be joining and a part of the Quality Control team at Northvolt Labs. Our QC team, currently composed of 25 dedicated laboratory technicians, analytical chemists and engineers, is working on all aspects of battery cell production quality inspections and investigations. You will have access to a fully equipped laboratory with high-end analytical instruments that cover both chemical and mechanical testing capabilities. You will play a key role in building up metallurgical battery cell analysis expertise within the team and the wider company.

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Responsible for all metallographic specimen preparation, analysis and mechanical testing activities performed in the QC laboratory to ensure that all produced battery cells of all formats are meeting quality and safety requirements as per control plan
Continuously improve laboratory testing methods, train team members, build up metallurgical competences within the team - good people skills, eager to learn and train others, share and gain knowledge to/from others
Expand the laboratory’s capability for mechanical testing and metallographic specimen preparation and analysis, establish collaborations and services with external testing laboratories, institutes and universities as needed
Work hands-on and collaboratively across teams to investigate issues or improve metallurgy related manufacturing processes such as calendering, heat treatments, welding processes of battery cell production lines
Have a data driven approach and analytical mindset, insist on answers and solutions that can be substantiated by data and/or engineering tests, avoiding the trap of finding a root cause driven by timelines instead of science.

We are looking for a candidate that:
Has an analytical mindset and eye for detail
Promoting and requiring facts and data to drive decision making in the organisation
Strong communication skills with all the key stakeholders and experts in a wide variety of technical disciplines
Proactive, strong-minded, quick thinker and assertive
Passionate and purpose driven
Has a can-do attitude and an entrepreneurial spirit
And most importantly is a team player!
