What you will do As a Senior Mechanical Engineer, you will collaborate with existing design engineers to control CAD output and generate innovative designs to solve technical problems. You will also analyze system performance and conduct hands-on testing of designs.
Mechanical design and development: Generate innovative designs in SolidWorks to solve technical challenges.
Design, prototype, and iterate: Develop parts, components, and assemblies for the artificial heart system.
Document design: Control design output specifications and manage company CAD files.
Hands-on testing: Test designs and prototype assembly in the in-vitro laboratory.
Generate reports: Create documentation in accordance with the company quality system, suitable for regulatory submission.
Supplier scouting and assessments: Evaluate potential suppliers and manage purchasing.
Collaboration: Work closely with the Mechanical Design Lead and report to the Site Manager and CTO, maintaining a high degree of independence, initiative, and responsibility.
Adaptability: As a member of a small company, be prepared to engage in tasks outside the immediate scope.


Skills and Experience
Degree in mechanical or biomedical engineering or equivalent.
Five years of industrial work experience using SolidWorks is essential, beneficial for pump experience and designing polymers (like polyurethane) for durability and flexibility.
Experience in a regulated environment such as medical devices, defence, automotive, or similar is preferred.
Experience with analysis packages such as Ansys for structural and thermal investigations is preferred.
Demonstrated ability to work in a small, innovative team.
Proven ability to work with external manufacturing partners and understand manufacturing capabilities and processes.
Excellent written communication skills and analytical problem-solving skills.
Hands-on prototyping and testing experience, including rapid prototyping and test rig assembly.

Realheart is looking for candidates motivated to progress the technology from the development stage to clinical use and commercialization. An opportunity exists for a senior design engineer professional to join the small and dynamic team to support design activities to meet documented performance requirements.
The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience with electro-mechanical equipment development in the field of medical devices.

Key responsibilities
· Effectively communicate department or area issues and results within and across functional areas and conducting presentations of details and/or technical information concerning specific projects or timelines
• Lead by example, developing and mentoring R&D team on product development methodology, critical thinking and problem-solving skills and encourage creativity in the R&D team
• Ensure timely and consistent communication to stakeholders (CEO, Management team and Board) on progress, risk management and change management associated with technology and R&D portfolio

Managerial
· The R&D Director will be managing a group of engineers both employees and consultants (5-10 persons).
· The members of the team have strong competencies within their own specialities. Some members of the team has participated in the project for a long time, but many of them are relatively new. A key to the success is to make them all work together and to create an environment where everyone is participating to the overall project plan
Education/Experience/Qualification
• Advanced degree in Engineering or Bioengineering required, preferred PhD
• Minimum of 5 years of direct product development and launch experience within medtech
• A minimum of 5 years’ experience of managerial roles
• Deep understanding of Medical technology or very similar technology/system
• Fluent English and Swedish skills in speaking, writing and understanding
The ideal candidate for this role will have experience in new concept and product development. S/he will have a strong working knowledge of design controls, and all relevant regulatory requirements for the design, development and commercialization of medtech products. S/he achieves objectives of technology innovation and product development, after consideration of time, cost and performance standards. Purpose:
As a member of the Realheart R&D team, you support the ongoing development of the Realheart Total Artificial Heart (TAH), designed to treat end stage heart failure. The Mechanical Design team supports this goal by designing, simulating, prototyping, and testing new components for the Realheart TAH. The In-Vitro Testing team advances TAH development by designing, prototyping, constructing, and implementing novel in-vitro test machines to improve TAH component design and generate data for regulatory submission.

General Description:
This internship position works at the interface of in-vitro testing and mechanical design, cooperating closely with engineers from each group. This position involves a balance of design tasks (SolidWorks CAD, hand calculations, and potential FE work) and hands-on prototyping/testing (rapid prototyping, test rig assembly, test operation). This intern will be supervised by R&D Engineers from both teams but is expected to work with a high degree of independence, initiative, and responsibility. Realheart is a small company and there will be situations that require work outside of this immediate scope.

Responsibilities
· In-Vitro Testing
o Design, prototype, and iterate new components for biomimetic in-vitro test rigs.
o Contribute to systemic design of new biomimetic in-vitro test rigs.
o Conduct performance, reliability, and/or hemocompatibility testing in close collaboration with R&D Engineers and laboratory scientists.
o Conduct maintenance on haematology test rigs and suggest design improvements.
o Process testing data and document test results in accordance with ISO/FDA regulations.
· Mechanical Component Design
o Improve upon existing components within the Realheart TAH.
o Design, prototype, and iterate new components for the Realheart TAH.
o Document design changes in accordance with Realheart company regulations
Necessary Skills and Qualifications:
· Educational background in Engineering or related field (Mechanical Engineering or Biomedical Engineering preferred)
· Computer Aided Design (SolidWorks preferred, FE experience is a positive)
· Prototyping skills (all are relevant – plastics, 3D printing, machining, etc)
· Test method (protocol) development
· Data processing (MATLAB/Octave preferred, statistics experience is a strong positive)
· Strong communication and teamwork
· English fluency (written and spoken)
Additional Qualifications of Interest:
· Fluid systems design and testing
· Test rig or test fixture design
· Thermal analysis
· Experience working in a regulated environment (medical devices preferred)
This is a paid part-time internship (12-15 hours per week)
